Left-rail spine

The bet: one persistent vertical line down the left edge is the whole site's backbone. It is literally always on screen, so the visitor never loses the thread. Sketches are nodes clamped to that rail; chapters breathe to its right.

Structural bets

  1. [1] The spine is a fixed left rail, on screen at all times. The thread is never off-view; scrolling moves the chapters, not the line.
  2. Sketch milestones (S1 river, S2 bulb, S3 portrait) are circular nodes clamped to the rail. The sketches are stations you pass, exactly the verbaltovisual vote.
  3. [3] Chapters live entirely to the right of the rail; each opens with a sticky held thought while its evidence unfolds beneath.
  4. [4] The ground shifts A, B, C, A, B per chapter. Colour-free here, but the band change marks "new section" semantically.
  5. One living mark (the filled dot) rides the rail, tracking reading progress. One small companion, not decoration.
  6. Mark-and-return docks at the rail's foot as a persistent tray; marking a line drops a chip in. On mobile it collapses to a bottom pill.
  7. Message-led: the hero question owns the first screen; Chetan (S3) enters only at chapter four.
  8. Single nav bar, one primary interaction (mark-and-return). No competing mechanics.
Main risk: a permanent left rail eats ~64px of every screen and can read as "sidebar app" chrome rather than a thought-line, especially on 390px where 52px is a lot of the width. The rail must stay hairline-quiet or it becomes furniture.
